Is Worrying High Jacking What God Wants To Do in Your Life?

Worry often hides in the background during the holiday season. She raises her head as if to remind us that everything can’t be entirely joy-filled. Especially in regards to travelling. She bursts into our thoughts with “what-if’s.” “What if they can’t get here on time?” “What if the weather delays flights?” “What if there is an accident on the highway?” Whether train, bus, plane, or car, the mode of transportation isn’t so much the issue as safety. Our hearts long to embrace friends and family in secure environments with happy hearts.

When worry latches on, the best method I’ve found to shake off her hold is converting those nagging phrases to words of prayer, praise and thanksgiving. For we know that when things seem out of control, God is always in control. He is our Defender, Advocate, and Protector. Below are a few examples of how we can exchange thoughts of worry to thoughts of fortitude.

1. Rather than thinking about our fears of the worst happening, we can reflect on the good that has happened. When we know the Lord, we have no reason to be afraid.

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? Psalm 118:6 ESV

2. Rather than allowing worry to consume our minds, we can lift thoughts of praise to God for His promises of protection and provision. The Lord has promised to give us the protection of His angels.

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11 ESV

3. Rather than dwelling on potential emergencies, we can think on positive encouragement. When we reflect on God’s work in our lives, we are inspired to look at future possibilities.

On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. Psalm 145:5 ESV Why worry when we can pray? May this prayer for safe travels encourage your heart to discard worry over safety and cover your friends and loved ones in prayer.

Dear Father,

When worry and fear lurk in my heart, teach me to praise you for your promises. Thank you for being the One in control; I know there is nothing to fear. Thank you for sending your angels to guard us here; I believe you love and protect like no other. Thank you for your secure hand and defending presence in the past; I praise you for continuing to hold the future. May I continue to reflect on your glory, My Defender.

Amen.
