The “Long-Nosed” Strategy: Why God might not be rushing your breakthrough!

When life begins to spiral, our natural human response is to speed up. We breathe faster, we work harder, we talk quicker, and we pray with a frantic urgency that borders on a panic attack. We look at the clock, the calendar, and our bank accounts, wondering why the “suddenly” God promised hasn’t arrived yet. But while we are hyperventilating over the timeline, the Creator of the universe is doing something entirely different. He is breathing.

In the ancient Hebrew language, there is a stunningly quirky description of God’s patience: Erekh Appayim. When you translate it literally, it means “long of nostrils.” It sounds funny at first, but the imagery is profound. Think of a person who is incredibly calm, taking a very long, slow, deep breath through their nose. While we are panting in exhaustion, God is operating with a “long nose”, holding a steady, peaceful rhythm that isn’t disrupted by our deadlines.

At WIN International Ministries, we want to explore what happens when your big dreams meet God’s long breath. What do you do when your life doesn’t fit the vision you had for it?

When the Dream Meets the Wall

Many of us started our journey with God with high expectations. We had goals that felt inspired by heaven, aspirations that were pure, and a faith that felt unshakable. We saw ourselves crossing finish lines, building empires, and living out a “happily ever after” that honored Him.

Then, reality hit.

Maybe for you, it was a sudden sickness that drained your energy and your savings. Perhaps it was a series of unforeseen circumstances, legal battles, family divisions, or economic shifts, that acted like a brick wall in the middle of your marathon. We see so many people who look back at their lives today and feel a heavy sense of discouragement. They aren’t just tired; they are disappointed. They are angry. They look at the gap between what they wanted and what they currently have, and they wonder if they missed God entirely.

The Story of Ashley: A Physician in the Waiting Room

Consider the story of Ashley. Ashley was the definition of a “good daughter” and a “faithful servant.” She accepted God at a young age and followed the path she felt He laid out. She excelled in school, graduated college, and became a leading physician. Her dream was clear: she wanted to open her own private practice where she could integrate her faith with top-tier medical care.

But as she stood on the precipice of her dream, her life took an unexpected turn. Her funds were low, and suddenly, her elderly parents required full-time care.

Ashley found herself in a nightmare. Her parents’ own physicians were indifferent and, frankly, useless. They lacked concern, refused to prescribe effective treatments, and treated her parents like numbers on a chart rather than human beings. When Ashley confronted them about their lack of care, they essentially told her that if she didn’t like it, she could go elsewhere.

She did. She went to doctor after doctor, only to find the same cold indifference.

To save her parents’ lives, Ashley was forced to become their 24/7 physician. She was the one diagnosing their conditions, treating them, and paying for every single medical expense out of her own pocket. Her social life evaporated. Her energy for friends or joy was replaced by a grueling cycle of work and caregiving.

Ashley began to ask the questions we all whisper in the dark: Where is God in this?

  • God said He is the Healer, so why are they still sick?
  • God said He is Elohim, the Strong One who provides, so why am I broke and exhausted?

She prayed, her parents prayed, and her church prayed. But nothing improved. She felt stuck, depressed, and deeply discouraged.

Does this sound like the season of life you are currently living in?

Does this narrative mirror the pages of your own life right now? Perhaps you aren’t a physician, but you are the one holding everything together while it feels like God is a spectator.

  • Are you in a situation where God’s description of Himself, Provider, Protector, Waymaker, doesn’t seem to match His current activity in your life?
  • Do you feel like you are doing everything “right,” yet the rewards are being handed to people who don’t even care about the Kingdom?
  • Are you wondering if your “Long-Nosed” God has simply forgotten to exhale?

If you are in this stretch, it is vital to understand that God isn’t ignoring you. He is incorporating the Erekh Appayim strategy. He is taking the long breath because He is seeing the end from the beginning, while we are only seeing the crisis of the moment.

The Revelation of the Long Breath

Ashley’s breakthrough didn’t come when she worked harder; it came when she received a revelation of what God was actually doing. She discovered that God was using this “waiting room” to build a level of expertise and compassion in her that she could never have gained in a comfortable office.

She realized that God was being “Long-Nosed” with her circumstances, not to punish her, but to perfectly time a triple-blessing that she wasn’t yet ready to manage. When she finally understood that she needed to “match God’s breathing” rather than hyperventilating, the atmosphere shifted.

Here is how God moved:

  1. Total Healing: Both of Ashley’s parents were eventually healed right here on earth, defying the “useless” doctors’ predictions.
  2. The Thriving Practice: The very skills she honed while treating her parents led to a breakthrough in her medical research. This opened doors for her to start her own practice, which became one of the most successful in her region.
  3. Unexpected Love: In the midst of her new practice, she met a charming, godly man. He didn’t just like her; he loved her instantly for the character she had developed during her years of trial. He proposed shortly after they met, providing the partnership she had long given up on.

How to Survive and Enjoy the “Long-Nosed” Stretch

If you find yourself in the middle of a delay, you don’t have to just “endure” it. You can actually thrive in it. Here is how we recommend navigating the Erekh Appayim seasons:

  • Ask for the Strategy Briefing: Instead of asking “Why is this happening?”, ask God to explain how He is working. Say, “Lord, show me the ‘Long-Nosed’ strategy here. What are You building in me that the dream requires?”
  • Practice the “Pace Match”: When you feel the panic rising, literally stop and take a long, slow breath. Remind yourself: “God is breathing slowly, so I will too.”
  • Stop Fighting the Timeline: Trust that Elohim is not just strong, but He is the Master of Time. If it’s taking longer, it’s because the harvest is going to be bigger.

What We Learn From the Long Nose

Ashley learned that God’s silence is not His absence. She learned that while she was taking care of her parents, God was taking care of her future.

The Erekh Appayim strategy reminds us that God is patient because He is certain. He doesn’t need to rush because He already knows the outcome. He is “long of nostrils” because He is slow to anger and rich in mercy, giving us the time we need to grow into the people who can actually sustain the dreams He has given us.

Faith is necessary because it is the only thing that bridges the gap between the “Long Breath” of God and the “Right Now” of our problems. Without faith, the delay looks like a denial. With faith, the delay looks like preparation.

Let’s Pray Together

We want to stand with you in whatever season you are facing. Let’s invite God’s peace into your timeline.

Heavenly Father, we come before You acknowledging that You are Elohim, the Strong One, and the Creator of time itself. Lord, for the one reading this who feels discouraged, stuck, and angry at how life has turned out, we ask for a fresh revelation of Your “Long-Nosed” Strategy. We specifically invite You into these moments of waiting. We invite Your long, calm breath to settle our spirits. We ask that You would reveal the hidden work You are doing in the middle of our difficulties. Help us to stop hyperventilating over the timeline and start trusting Your rhythm. We thank You that our breakthroughs are coming, and they will be better than we imagined. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Word of Encouragement:
Do not give up on the dreams God put in your heart. Just because the path looks different than you planned doesn’t mean the destination has changed. You are being prepared for a weight of glory that requires a “long-nosed” patience. Stay steady. Your exhale is coming!
