Winning the Lifelong Battle of stress (Part 2)

In Part 1, we talked about how stress can steal so much from our lives, our peace, joy, health, relationships, and even our sense of purpose. But here’s the beautiful truth we need to hold onto: God is in the restoration business. He doesn’t just want to help us survive what stress has taken; He wants to give us back even more than what we lost.

But let’s be real about something, this isn’t a one-time fix. This is a lifelong battle that requires us to stay alert, stay aware, and learn how to fight against God’s adversary who shows up in all kinds of disguises.

Why This Battle Never Really Ends

Here’s something we need to understand: much of the stress we face isn’t just random life stuff happening to us. Satan, God’s adversary, is actively working to steal, kill, and destroy everything good in our lives (John 10:10). He’s strategic about it too.

Think about how he operates, he doesn’t always come at us with obvious attacks. Instead, he disguises his work through:

  • Overwhelming circumstances that make us feel like we’re drowning
  • Toxic relationships that drain our energy and joy
  • Financial pressures that keep us in survival mode
  • Health issues that wear us down physically and emotionally
  • Mental battles with anxiety, depression, and fear

Satan knows that if he can keep us stressed, overwhelmed, and exhausted, we’ll be too tired to fight back spiritually. We’ll be too distracted to seek God, too depleted to help others, and too discouraged to believe that restoration is possible.

This is why we have to stay alert. The battle is real, and our enemy is cunning. But here’s the good news, we’re not fighting alone, and we’re definitely not fighting from a losing position.

Practical Ways to Partner with God in Restoration

God wants to put back what stress has stolen, but He invites us to partner with Him in the process. Here are some generous, practical ways we can work alongside God:

Daily Spiritual Check-ins

Start each morning by asking God, “What do You want to restore in my life today?” End each evening by thanking Him for what He’s already doing, even if you can’t see it yet.

Create Prayer Routines That Work

Don’t overcomplicate prayer. Try praying while you’re walking, driving, or doing dishes. Make it conversational. Tell God exactly what stress has stolen and ask Him specifically to restore it.

Use Scripture as Your Weapon

Memorize verses about restoration and speak them over your life:

  • “The Lord will restore to you the years the locust has eaten” (Joel 2:25)
  • “He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:3)
  • “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5)

Practice Gratitude Journaling

Write down three things you’re grateful for each day, no matter how small. This helps rewire your brain to see God’s goodness even in difficult seasons.

Set Healthy Boundaries

God doesn’t want us to be doormats. Learn to say no to things that drain you unnecessarily. Protect your peace like the valuable treasure it is.

Stay Connected to Your Faith Community

Don’t isolate yourself. Find people who can pray with you, encourage you, and remind you of God’s faithfulness when you forget.

Worship Through the Storm

Put on worship music and sing, even when you don’t feel like it. Worship shifts the atmosphere and reminds your heart who’s really in control.

How to Seek God for Restoration

Seeking God for restoration isn’t about manipulating Him into giving us what we want. It’s about aligning our hearts with His will and trusting His process. Here’s how:

Surrender Control

This is probably the hardest part. We have to let go of our tight grip on how and when restoration should happen. Tell God, “I trust Your timing and Your methods, even when I don’t understand them.”

Pray Specifically

Don’t just pray general prayers like “God, help me.” Get specific: “God, restore my marriage. Heal my body. Provide for my financial needs. Give me back the joy that depression stole.”

Seek Wise Counsel

God often uses other people to guide us toward restoration. Don’t be afraid to talk to a pastor, counselor, or trusted friend about what you’re going through.

Wait on God’s Timing

This is tough in our instant-gratification culture, but God’s timing is always perfect. Sometimes He’s preparing us for the restoration. Sometimes He’s preparing the restoration for us.

Real Stories of Restoration

Let’s look at some examples of how God puts back what’s been stolen:

Job’s Story: After losing everything, his children, wealth, health, and reputation, God restored Job with double what he had before. Job 42:10 says, “The Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.”

The Prodigal Son: After wasting his inheritance and hitting rock bottom, the father not only welcomed him back but threw a party and restored his position in the family (Luke 15:11-32).

David’s Journey: Even after making terrible mistakes that cost him dearly, God restored David’s relationship with Him and his purpose as king.

We’ve seen modern examples too, people who lost their homes and ended up in better situations, marriages that were restored stronger than before, health that was completely healed after doctors gave up hope, and financial breakthroughs that exceeded what was originally lost.

Understanding the Process vs. Quick Fix

Here’s something really important we need to grasp: Remember restoration is usually a process, not a quick fix. God could snap His fingers and instantly restore everything, but often He chooses to work gradually because:

  • He’s doing more than just giving stuff back, He’s changing us in the process
  • He’s building our faith and character through the journey
  • He wants us to recognize His hand in our restoration so we give Him the glory
  • He’s preparing us to handle what He’s about to restore

Think of it like physical therapy after an injury. You don’t just immediately go back to lifting heavy weights. You start small, build strength gradually, and work with a professional who knows the process. God is our spiritual physical therapist, and He knows exactly what pace we need.

Sometimes restoration looks like sudden breakthroughs, but more often it looks like small, daily improvements that compound over time. Don’t despise the small beginnings, celebrate every tiny victory because it’s evidence that God is working.

Staying in the Fight

Remember, this is a lifelong battle, which means we need sustainable strategies:

  • Stay connected to God daily, not just when crisis hits
  • Keep good people around you who will remind you of God’s faithfulness
  • Don’t give up when progress seems slow, trust the process
  • Celebrate small victories along the way
  • Help others who are fighting similar battles, there’s power in community

The enemy wants us to give up, get bitter, or lose hope. But we know the end of the story, God wins, and so do we when we stay connected to Him.

Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. Keep partnering with God, keep fighting the good fight, and keep expecting breakthrough. Your story of restoration is being written right now.

Let’s Pray Together

God, we come to You right now with hearts that have been hurt by stress and circumstances beyond our control. We acknowledge that stress has stolen things from us, our peace, our joy, our health, our relationships, maybe even our hope. But today, we’re asking You to step into our situations and begin the work of restoration.

Lord, we surrender control to You. We stop trying to figure it all out on our own and we trust Your timing, Your methods, and Your heart for us. We specifically ask You to restore what has been stolen from us, and we thank You in advance for the breakthrough that’s coming.

Help us stay alert to the enemy’s tactics, but also help us rest in Your promises. Give us strength for this lifelong battle, and surround us with people who will encourage us along the way. We believe You’re working behind the scenes, even when we can’t see it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
