God can “fix” what stress has stolen!
We live in a world where stress feels like a constant companion. It creeps into our days, shadows our nights, and slowly but surely steals precious things from our lives. If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve felt the weight of stress pressing down on you, maybe even right now. You’re not alone in this struggle, and more importantly, there’s hope for restoration.
Today, we’re starting a journey together: a journey to understand what stress has stolen from us and how God wants to put it all back. This isn’t just about feeling better; it’s about reclaiming the abundant life Jesus promised us.
What Has Stress Stolen From Us?
Let’s be honest about what stress takes away. It’s not just about feeling overwhelmed or having a bad day. Stress is a master thief that systematically robs us of the things that matter most.
Our Joy and Peace: Remember when you used to wake up excited about the day ahead? When laughter came easily and peace felt natural? Chronic stress steals that joy, replacing it with anxiety and a constant sense of unease. We find ourselves snapping at loved ones, unable to enjoy simple pleasures, always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Our Health: The research is clear: stress wreaks havoc on our bodies. It increases our risk of heart disease, disrupts our sleep, causes headaches and muscle tension, weakens our immune system, and can even lead to weight gain. Our bodies were designed to handle short bursts of stress, not the chronic pressure many of us live under daily.

Our Relationships: When stress takes hold, it affects how we connect with others. We become irritable, withdrawn, and less patient. We stop investing in friendships, struggle to be present with our families, and sometimes isolate ourselves when we need connection the most. Stress makes us feel like burdens to others, so we pull away just when we need support.
Our Dreams and Purpose: Perhaps most heartbreaking of all, stress can steal our vision for the future. Those dreams God placed in our hearts start feeling impossible. We lose confidence in our abilities and begin settling for less than what God intended for our lives.
Our Spiritual Connection: Stress can make prayer feel impossible, Bible reading seem pointless, and church attendance feel like just another obligation. It creates noise in our hearts that drowns out God’s voice, leaving us feeling spiritually dry and disconnected.
The Enemy Behind the Scenes
Here’s something we need to understand: not all stress is just “part of life.” The Bible tells us clearly that we have an adversary, and his name is Satan. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).
Satan doesn’t want you living in the fullness of what God has for you. He’s strategic in how he uses stress as a weapon:
He Overwhelms Us: Satan piles circumstance upon circumstance, making us feel like we’re drowning. When we’re overwhelmed, we stop thinking clearly and make decisions based on fear rather than faith.
He Isolates Us: Stress makes us want to withdraw, which is exactly what the enemy wants. When we’re isolated, we’re more vulnerable to his lies and less likely to receive the help and encouragement God wants to provide through others.
He Creates Confusion: In the chaos of stress, it becomes hard to hear God’s voice. Satan loves confusion because it keeps us from walking confidently in God’s plans for our lives.

He Attacks Our Identity: Under stress, we start believing lies about ourselves: that we’re failures, that God doesn’t care about us, that we’re too broken to be fixed. These are all direct attacks on who God says we are.
This Is a Lifelong Battle
We need to understand something important: this battle with stress and the enemy behind it isn’t a one-time fight. It’s a lifelong journey that requires us to stay alert, aware, and ready to fight. The apostle Peter warned us: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
Satan doesn’t give up easily. He appears in disguise: sometimes as “just normal life stress,” other times as well-meaning advice from friends, or even as our own inner voice telling us we’re not good enough. Learning to recognize his tactics is crucial for our victory.
Hope for Restoration
But here’s the beautiful truth we’re building toward: God is in the business of restoration. Throughout Scripture, we see story after story of God putting back what the enemy had stolen.
Look at Job: Satan took his health, his wealth, his children, and his reputation. But God restored it all and gave him even more than he had before. Consider David, who lost his sense of joy and felt distant from God after his sin with Bathsheba. In Psalm 51:12, he cried out, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation,” and God did exactly that.

Think about the woman with the issue of blood who had suffered for twelve years. Stress from her condition had stolen her health, her place in society, her financial security, and her hope. But one touch of Jesus’ garment restored everything the enemy had taken (Mark 5:25-34).
In our own time, we’ve seen countless examples of God’s restoration. Sarah, a single mom we know, was overwhelmed by financial stress after losing her job. Panic attacks had stolen her sleep and confidence. Through prayer, community support, and trusting God’s provision, she not only found a better job but also discovered gifts she never knew she had. God didn’t just restore what was stolen: He gave her more.
Starting the Journey Back
As we prepare for Part 2 of this series tomorrow, where we’ll dive deep into practical strategies for letting God restore what stress has stolen, here are some initial steps to consider:
Acknowledge the Theft: Take time to honestly assess what stress has taken from your life. Don’t minimize it or pretend everything is fine. God wants to heal what’s actually broken, not what we pretend is broken.
Recognize the Real Enemy: Start identifying when stress might be more than just circumstances. Ask yourself: “Is this attack meant to steal my joy, my peace, my faith, or my relationships?”
Remember God’s Heart: God doesn’t want you living under the weight of stress. He wants to carry your burdens and give you His peace that passes understanding.

A Process, Not a Quick Fix
Before we close, we want to be completely honest with you: restoration is a process that takes time. God rarely works through quick fixes. Just as stress didn’t steal from your life overnight, restoration often happens gradually, step by step, day by day.
This isn’t about lack of faith or God not caring. It’s about God knowing that lasting change requires time for our hearts, minds, and bodies to adjust. He’s more interested in permanent transformation than temporary relief.
Let’s Pray Together
We want to invite you to pray with us right now. Don’t worry about having the “right” words: just come as you are:
God, we come to You feeling weary and overwhelmed. We acknowledge that stress has stolen so much from our lives: our joy, our peace, our health, and sometimes even our hope. We recognize that our enemy has been at work, trying to rob us of the abundant life You promised. We don’t want to live this way anymore. Come into our circumstances right now. Begin the work of restoration in our hearts, minds, and bodies. Help us to trust Your process and timing. We surrender our stress to You and ask You to carry what we cannot. Give us wisdom to recognize the enemy’s tactics and strength to stand against them. We believe You can put back everything stress has stolen from us, and we’re ready to partner with You in this journey. Thank You for loving us enough to fight for us. In Your precious name, amen.
You are not forgotten, friend. You are not too far gone, too stressed out, or too broken for God to restore. He sees every sleepless night, every moment of panic, every tear you’ve cried in frustration. And He’s already working on your behalf.
In Part 2, we’re going to explore specific, practical ways to partner with God in putting back what stress has stolen. We’ll talk about spiritual warfare tactics, daily practices that invite God’s restoration, and how to stay strong for the long haul.
