When the Prophecy “Still Doesn’t Match God’s Promises”: Here’s help for how to Live in the in-Between!
More than likely, You got a word from God. A powerful, life-altering prophecy that settled deep in your spirit and gave you a vivid picture of your future in Christ. You have probably prayed, you have given, you have acted in faith—but when you look at your reality today, it feels like the picture frame is still empty. Your circumstances don’t line up. If this sounds like you, you’re like most people we’ve talked to about their life’s circumstances, you’re stuck in the in-between, right in the middle of a promise and its fulfillment, and the world—which is so often messy and opposed to God’s ways—is pressing in on you which is causing you to be tired, discouraged and discouraged and you’re probably wondering what is going on??
If you’re feeling weary, dear brother or sister, let me tell you this: Delay is not disproof. God’s promises are not based on your perfect execution, the timing of the world, or the opposition you face. They are anchored in His unchanging character and the spiritual law of His faithfulness. He is still on the throne, and He sees you in the waiting. He remembers what He promised you. He knows what He said. He knows exactly what you have tried and how long you have been waiting. He knows exactly where you are, as a matter of fact, He either placed you where you are or allowed you to be where you are presently parked in a lane called, “still waiting”!
The Purpose in the Pause
God has a deep and loving purpose in the pause, even when you are facing the ups and downs of life among those who don’t know Him. When you look to Him regarding your problems, know that He sees them not as roadblocks, but as opportunities to shape you. The waiting is not wasted time; it’s a divine preparation.
- He is Inspecting You: Like a refiner’s fire, the heat of the wait reveals what you truly rely on. Do you lean on your own strength, or on the One who raises the dead? Problems are an inspection, revealing the real Lord of your life (James 1:2-3).
- He is Perfecting Your Character: Jesus, in His earthly ministry, was always moved by compassion for those who came to Him for help. He looked past their sickness or need to the person inside. In your waiting, God is perfecting your own character, growing patience, endurance, and a depth of faith that a quick answer could never produce. He is more concerned with your holiness than your immediate comfort (Romans 5:3-4).
- He is Securing the Fulfillment: The delay may be about God aligning things you can’t see, moving mountains in the spiritual realm, or simply preparing you to handle the massive blessing He’s bringing. He is making you capable of sustaining the miracle.
Lessons From the Long Wait
You are not the first to live in the contradiction between revelation and reality. Look at a few heroes of the faith who knew what it meant to wait on God’s word:
- Caleb: The Old Man Ready to Fight. Caleb was promised an inheritance in the Promised Land because he trusted God completely. But because of the faithlessness of the entire nation, he spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness. He walked side-by-side with doubt and death, but never let go of his word. At 85 years old, he finally received his mountain—and still had to fight giants (Joshua 14:6–15)! Caleb shows us that God’s promise is still valid, no matter how long the funeral procession of the old season takes. His strength was renewed because he walked with the promise in his heart for four decades.
- Hannah: Persistent Faith in the Face of Scorn. Hannah’s fervent prayer for a child led to a powerful declaration from the priest Eli: “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition” (1 Samuel 1:17). That was her prophecy. But she didn’t get pregnant that day. She went back home to face the daily scorn of her rival wife and the barren reality of her body. She waited, not just for a child, but for the right child, one she could dedicate wholly to God. Her delay refined her to become the mother of the great prophet Samuel. Her story reminds you that the waiting prepares a special vessel for a consecrated gift.
- The Paralyzed Man at Bethesda: The Unexpected Source of the Miracle. This man waited for 38 years by a pool, hoping for a superstition to be his cure (John 5:1–9). Every time the water stirred, someone else beat him to it. The expected way failed, year after year. His fulfillment didn’t come from the water, but from a sudden, unexpected divine intervention—Jesus. This shows you that God is not limited to the means you expect. Your miracle might not come in the way you’ve planned, but it will come from the only Way: Jesus Christ.
Your Action Plan in the In-Between
Your role now is not passive waiting, but active faith. Here are new solutions to help you keep walking when your reality contradicts your revelation:
- Refuse the Lie that Delay is Disproof: Every time the enemy whispers, “It’s not going to happen,” respond out loud with your prophetic word and Caleb’s faith. God cannot lie. His Word is “Yes and Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
- Focus on the Process of Character, Not Just the Promise of Circumstance: Ask God, “What endurance, love, or wisdom are you building in me through this wait?” The new you is part of the promise. Be intentional about studying the character of Jesus, and let the pressure mold you into His likeness.
- Invest in What You Do Have: Like Hannah, who returned to her life but did not stop praying, don’t let the lack of the big thing stop you from being faithful with the small things. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Tend to your relationships, your current duties, and your spiritual disciplines. Faithfulness in the small is the training ground for the big.
- Embrace the Divine Interruption: Be spiritually alert for the God who walks by your pool of disappointment. The fulfillment may come in a radically different form than you envisioned. Don’t limit God to the way you think it must happen.
My dear friend, if you are “still” living in the “still doesn’t match” season, I want you to remember this: God’s purpose in your problem is to produce a glorious, Christ-like character that can sustain His ultimate promise. The faithfulness of God is the most constant spiritual law in the universe.
- The Story of the Wait: You are walking the path of Caleb, Hannah, and the man at Bethesda—a path of consecrated waiting that ends not in disappointment, but in divine fulfillment which often surpasses the original promise.
- The Action: Continue to live in active faith. Refuse the lie of doubt, embrace the character growth, be faithful with what you have, and be ready for God’s unexpected intervention.
Here is a verse to anchor your heart today:
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”
— Hebrews 10:23
Let’s pray, Heavenly Father, YOU are my living hope, I invite You into this in-between space where my reality contradicts the word You have spoken. I confess that the waiting is hard, and I ask for Your supernatural grace to continue walking by faith and not by sight. Teach me the lessons I need to learn in this pause. Strengthen my character to be ready for the fulfillment. Help me to trust Your timing and Your way, knowing that You are a faithful God who works all things together for my ultimate good and for Your glory. Let the patience of Christ be my portion today, and sustain me, encourage me, bless me and help me until Your promise is established. Amen.
